Thinking on the evolution of my work since 2003, influenced by location/place (the overlay of Florida with LA, where I grew up), my mother's lavish decor, the desire to go beyond the see-able, and the discovery ofYuan Dynasty scrolls.
Bent Tree, 2007, 56 x 53 inches, acrylic and oil on linen.
Pours were my prompt for composite landscapes, inspired by the spontaneous "splashed ink" technique in scroll painting.
Autumn Leaves, 2010, acrylic and oil on linen, 44.5 x 72 inches.
Made at Yaddo. Starting with pours to build space with the emergence of pattern to navigate space. Landscape balances form and formlessness, sidestepping Western separation of mind and body in favor of a holistic view. Ab Ex aimed for this unity but scroll painting married gesture and image with singular intention. Mind and body work as one in the intensive preparation for, and painting session.
